The ability to read, write and do basic math are skills many people take for granted. In Wichita and the surrounding area, however, an estimated 19 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 24 have less than a high school diploma – almost one in five.
The Literate Community Strategic Alliance believes that is unacceptable. The Alliance wants to develop a skilled workforce for the region and ultimately create an environment where everyone can be successful.
As part of Visioneering Wichita's Education Foundation, the Alliance will be a part of efforts that provide lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.
From people who want to learn English, to those who want to gain skills for better paying jobs to those who simply want to read to the children in their lives, literacy is a critical first step.
The Alliance wants to ensure it's the best first step possible for the thousands who need it.
